Tracing Back to Bligh

2013

Commonwealth Parliamentary Offices at 1 Bligh Street, Sydney

Tracing Back to Bligh is drawn from a catalogue of maps spanning the period from 1788-2011. Governor Bligh, the Governor of Sydney from 1805 to 1808 is also the ancestor of the artist Chris Fox. Bligh was renowned for his navigational skills and detailed free hand cartography. The calibration of the maps collected allows the historical patterns of growth and expansion to emerge. An analysis of a focus area, produced series of progressive iterations, refiguring the map throughout the history of the city. These artworks explore how human and topographical influences have shaped the city’s evolution. These works begin with navigation and documentation as a resource to evolve a visual understanding of the city.
